A Gala Evening

This past weekend, my husband and I attended the Miami University 19th Annual Wine Tasting Gala & Auction.  It's become a slight tradition (6 years straight!) with our wonderful friends who live in Ohio.  We definitely look forward to the fermented grape-fueled fun, and I for sure look forward to the chance to dress up and put together, yet another, fun ensemble!

For this year's Gala, I decided to go a little bit out there.  I've worn this dress before, to Liz's wedding, and figured it would be the perfect backdrop to a bunch of neon accents.

Photo Disclaimer:
I apologize for the bad lighting in these pictures.  My camera's flash seemed to have gone on strike that night!  Any pictures had to be taken with a camera phone. :(

Here is a set of the items that I put together for this evening out.

Closet lessons learned...
1. Check the camera status before you leave home.
2. Neon works perfect with navy!
3. Navy dress, navy tights and navy shoes are an awesome monochrome look.
A great alternative to black!

Pink and Rain

Okay, so you may have noticed that I don't like taking pictures of my own outfits.  I feel weird posing for the camera, especially when the photographer is begrudgingly taking my photo and can't wait for his duty to be over. (Yes dear, thank you dear.)
Reason #1 I don't like posting pictures of myself...I don't typically wear makeup unless we're going out for date night or something exciting (ie. with other people)...this is a new development. Ever since I became a mom, I'm sad to say, makeup is just not as important to me.
Reason #2...the whole posing thing without smiling at the camera cheesily (like that word? hehe).
Hence the reason why my head is almost ALWAYS cut off.
Reason #3...did I mention the lack of eager photographers?

Needless to say, I decided to try out the timed shutter on my camera tonight while hubby was out...

Of course lil miss K had to get in on this action!

Two more from the other day when we went to lunch.  Not sure what happened to the scarf, but I still like the color!

Old Standby

When I don't know what to wear, or simply don't want to strain the extra brain cells to create an outfit, I reach for my old standby...the black turtleneck. This piece of clothing never lets me down. Always chic, refined, and never stuffy, I like that it can even make a pair of jeans look polished. Black turtlenecks are the ultimate layering piece or backdrop for many outfits.

I chose to wear mine recently with my cargo green toothpick jeans, Minnetonka mocs, shawl collar cardigan and a animal print scarf to top it off.

mocs

It's a good thing I don't take pictures of myself.  Today's outfit would have included yogurt smears on my shoulder, dog hair on my tights, and turkey-spinach-something on my glasses.  Oh the joys of being a mother!

Nonetheless, here's what I wore. :)

Just a Warm Up

With all the resort lines in stores and online and spring concepts about to hit the  racks (watch out, it's totally coming...February: it snows and Nordstrom is carrying sandals).  For those of you going to a warmer place (or live there) ...you stink.  Just kidding (sort of). ;)  For those of us not planning a tropical getaway or who live in places where it snows until March, here's how to make the most of the AWESOME spring colors and pieces until the weather really gets here.

Use this checklist of winter essentials to start your layers...winter layering essentials

COLOR
It's everywhere for spring; neons, pastels, florals... Work it now by combining with what you already have.
J Crew mini skirt
I see this with a pair of tights and a scarf.  Save the fun shoes for once you're inside somewhere; until then, boots will do very nicely.
Layer on a colorful coat over a turtleneck dress.
Or just a black shift dress with a scarf.

Just add water...I mean, tights and a blazer!  If you're adventurous enough, go with a turtleneck underneath or chambray shirt over the dress.  Either way, you'll be warm.
Nautical Now

Stripes are a great back drop for colorful accessories.

blue dress
This dress will be perfect with a colorful pair of wedges come spring.  For now, I'd settle with a blazer, tights, and a raspberry scarf.

Long sleeve striped shirt + chambray shirt + blazer/jacket + toothpick jeans = winter layering chic

Work In Some Glitz

If you're anything like me, you've likely added some new "holiday" inspired pieces to your wardrobe in the past month. It's just too hard to pass up glitter and sequins when you're in a festive mood! But, *sigh* the holidays are over and now you're left with a cute top/ pant/dress/belt/piece of jewelry that you're afraid may never make another appearance until next December...what to do?!
Don't worry, there are many ways to add these pieces in to your everyday wardrobe. Here are a few ideas to help give those special pieces the extra attention they deserve!

Throw on your sequin top with an everyday outfit.  Instead of opting for the safe look of a chunky sweater, black pants and boots, be brave...you won't be disappointed!

Layer your glitzy sweater over a crisp button down and under a blazer.  It'll give your work outfit the uplift you need to get through the day!

Chambray or denim is always easy to pair with sequins, either on top or on the bottom.  Layering is key with this look.

Pair your glittery bottom with a tailored top.  No need to go overboard on accessories...keep it simple for daytime.

All you need are some stripes to temper the glow of sequins and glitter.  I love this nautical look with a touch of fun.  Easy to pull off in the warmer months, but just as fun with some tights and a blazer in the winter time.

Here are some of the other ways I've already reworn my "sparklies"...

This sequin ribbon (I originally bought it when thin neck wraps were in...a loong time ago!) doubled as a belt, tied in a cute bow.  I safety pinned it on to the skirt so that it didn't go anywhere. :)

I layered this sequin tank with a tweed pencil skirt and a button down.  The scarf tucked in to the shirt was an added holiday/colorful touch.

I love this top.  I have worn it so many times and I wanted to make it completely fresh to me.  Instead of pairing it with the obvious black, I went with brown instead this time.  Definitely a different look!

This was my NYE Eve dinner outfit. (Flats were key for the walking we were going to do in downtown Traverse City).  I love pairing my chambray shirt with this sequin skirt!  But, it looks equally great with a plain tank, cardigan, and scarf.  Or even a turtleneck.

There are so many ways to wear some sparkle after the holidays.  I hope you do!
