StyleChops: An Afternoon of Styling, Competition, and Fun!

I am honored to have been a part of the first ever #StyleChops styling event hosted by Rachel Schostak of Styleshack and Bruna Camargo of Style-Mile at Guys-N-Gals this past Sunday. What an intense and fun-filled afternoon we had!  Surrounded by talented bloggers and stylists, we raced against the clock to style cohesive looks on two mannequins.  There were three rounds, each round a different theme, chosen by Julie, the store owner based on the Styleshack Archetypes. The judges then voted on their favorite styles at the end of the three rounds.  It was a tough decision, I'm sure...the looks were all so different and creative. So much personal style in one room!

I was blessed to have my little assistant by my side: Kennedy even tried to dress her own mannequin... just like mommy! My supportive husband made sure that anyone interested in the big MSU basketball game had a by-the-minute score update. We made quite the team!

What I wore:

Jacket- Evereve
Dress(worn as skirt)- Guys N Gals
Belt- ribbon (I kept it from a Louis Vuitton gift wrap ;p)
Tights- Wolford
Boots- Tory Burch
Watch- Movado
Glasses- Prada
Bracelet- Tiffany&Co.

Saturday Outfit Inspiration

Spring is in the air; I can feel it!  Try a lighter look to get you in the mood this weekend.  I love mixing black and blue together. You can brighten up a darker mix with a light colored scarf to help give it a springtime vibe.  I'm going to try this mix today- striped top, denim jacket, flared black skirt, booties, lightweight scarf and crossbody bag.  Outfit photos to come soon!

To recreate this outfit on your own, try pairing these items:

Silk and Leopard

We spent a fun evening with friends this weekend, which included a trip downtown to hear the sounds of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, featuring an amazingly talented Irish fiddler.  A totally cultured way to begin the celebration of St. Patrick's Day!

The leopard clutch I'm carrying was just sent to me from +Shopbop and I AM IN LOVE.  I frantically searched +Pinterest for some quick outfit ideas and found this image:

Red. Olive. Leopard.  I had all of these in my closet!

Black and Blue and Bright All Over

pants (Limited- similar here) // top (LK Bennett- available in select stores) //
cardigan (J.Crew) // flats (Tory Burch) // earrings (Kate Spade) //
bracelets (J.Crew- similar and here

This top has such a gorgeous floral, I thought it'd be the perfect way to welcome spring this week!  I searched my closet using my THE STYLED LIFE account to see what else I had to go with it.  Putting the outfit together was easy and reminded me what I was going to wear the next day!

I mixed bright blues and black for this outfit combination.  This is an easy way to transition to brights for spring if you're not ready to jump right in.

And also, I'm going to try and include shopping links in my posts from now on for those of you who are interested in similar items. Disclaimer: I've collected my items over the years, so many things may no longer be available, but I will try my best to link to similar items that are current!

Honestly, I Didn't Remember Writing This

I found this post hidden in my "draft" archives and couldn't help but share.  At the time I wrote it (almost 3 years ago!), it seemed too honest to make public for everyone to read.   One thing I have learned over the years, is honesty is the best way.  Being honest can leave you feeling vulnerable, but vulnerability leads to change.  I love change.  And, I enjoy reading my past thoughts...even more when they resonate with the way I still feel today.  I LOVE THIS BLOG!

March 21, 2012

I've enjoyed a new wine lately...Cupcake Vineyards, Red Velvet.  Maybe a little too much, as it inspired this thought wrenching vomit of words below...

I went blog searching tonight and realized a few things about what I'm doing here on my little free island of internet...
I have a pretty old school camera.
I don't know everything about fashion.
I'm not InStyle or whowhatwear.com
I love to remix mall or outlet finds to create professional and updated modern classic looks.
If you're looking for high fashion or street style looks, you probably won't find it here.
If you're looking for every day ideas for outfits you may have in your closet, look no further, this is my mission.
My life is about living and loving life on the inside and out.  I love to get dressed and think that it reflects how I feel on the inside.  Some may think caring so much about how one looks is shallow, I think this is who I am and who I want people to see.
I don't have a degree in fashion or merchandising, I teach first grade.  I'm a normal gal, with a normal life, who loves to play in other people's closets.
I would love to show more on my blog, but am not sure what my readers are looking/hoping for...and until then, what you see is what you get.
I do enjoy being a source for my friends to turn to for fashion advice and shopping and styling tips.  I don't know it all, but LOVE to be a reference.

My husband doesn't understand why I blog, and likes to challenge me with the idea that it is a waste of time.  Sometimes I agree with him.  Blogging is very time consuming and can have little return. Still, I continue to come back and feed this little monster of mine on cyberspace hoping that I am a slight help to others in some way.  Maybe.  If I can help tie a scarf at school or help a stranger pick the right shoe, I hope I can inspire someone on the internet to try something new out of what they own.

Maybe, just maybe, I am making a difference.  And in the end, I love every minute of it.  Isn't that what truly matters?

XO,
Courtney
